1. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
A problem that is absolutely crucial to solve is that of the general involvement of the populace. Regardless of the issue or region, public awareness must not only be raised, but actually engaged as well. The world is faced with so many crises, conflicts, and disasters, and it cannot be overstated how well human beings as a whole would be able to avert, mitigate, and in some cases even stop their occurrence with forceful commitment. Too often we stare at our television sets while eating dinner, listen to the radio while driving, or mindlessly scroll through our phone apps when we stumble upon awful news and inattentively/carelessly state, “Oh, what a shame.” At first glance, a solution to this type of issue may seem overly idealistic, but it is not.
Human beings are able to accomplish the impossible when our minds are set to the task. As with most things in life, education is the key to the development and achievement of this lofty goal. Society needs to not just inform young students of these revolving issues, but inspire them to action. Programs that actively involve the community on a regular basis will instill the necessary values and accomplish a great deal in terms of reformation and future action. Many will state that involuntary commitment violates basic human rights, but there are innumerable examples of authority in territories the world over that do so for the right reasons and people have come to accept and support it. It has become an integral and irreversible part of the collective imagination.

2. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
Throughout my life, I have been fortunate enough to have accomplished a great deal. One period in my life that stands out as a proud moment and shining example is the five years I spent abroad in Germany. Coming from a lower middle class family in the United States, university education was never a guarantee. Like most other students at this stage in their lives, I was reluctantly willing to apply for loans from banks and accept the exorbitant costs of repaying the interest on them. After about two years, my mother lost her employment and wasn’t entirely sure she would be able to offer me even minimal support. It was this event that convinced me to seek higher education abroad and I decided on Germany.
I always considered myself to be independent and hard-working, but my initial time in Europe put me to the test so to speak. In addition to the mandatory attendance of classes, I needed to rapidly become fluent in the German language while seeking part-time employment to support myself and my studies. In pursuit of this aim, I enrolled myself in intensive German lessons that required me to be in class four hours a day, five days a week. Naturally this was all a tiresome burden, but it enabled me to understand that my life in the United States was quite privileged (even considering my comparative low level economic status.) As much as I had to work hard to reach the level of my peers, it was nothing compared to being alone in a foreign land and starting from nothing. Possibly an even greater area of personal growth was family-related. One does not truly realize the importance of family when in daily contact with family members. The level of trust, care, and love is underestimated. Being able to have time apart from my family for an extended period of time really allowed me to appreciate them more and in turn grow closer and more sympathetic to their varying situations.

3. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
Colonization of space is a concept that absolutely fascinates me. Though I believe that a deep logistical understanding is out of my reach, the greater ramifications for humanity inspire me. Science, well so-called “hard sciences” have always been at the periphery of my education and I would like to gain a wider understanding of them. So many branches of science are involved in this endeavor that the potential reading material is inexhaustible. Physics, engineering, biology, mathematics, etc. are part and parcel to expansion into the heavens.
Humanity has reached an epoch where the idea of living on other worlds is no longer a dream, but an eventuality. It is not just the future that piques my interest though, but the contemporary era. How did we as a species get to the point where space colonization is not just a grand scientific achievement, but more than likely a necessity to continue our very existence? Our planet has become so rife with pollution and environmental degradation, that there are debates in the scientific community concerning whether or not Earth is actually salvageable or too far gone for any type of solution to reverse the terrible and accelerating situation.
Questions abound and boundless possibilities exist. What will colonization look like? What form(s) will it take? A point of great interest is how sovereignty will be decided and granted among the nation-states of Earth. Will new planets be divvied up or will a larger spirit of cooperation ensue where human beings bond and come closer? This is captivating because it determines everything about us; where we are going, how we will get there, and what will become of us when reach this stage. Since I am an amateur at best, I find that consulting scientific journals and publications offers the best answers to my questions. If there was an individual nearby that possessed knowledge in this area, I would prefer face to face contact and lively discussion.
